The great stregnth of this book is that McFeeley remembers that Grant had a lfe after the Civil War and devotes much space to Grant's presidency and and post presidential life. Grant was a great enigma in that he was able to succeed in managing the conduct of the Civil War yet was a failure in business and had serious shortcomings as by: “Grant: A Biography” is William McFeely’s Pulitzer Prize winning biography of the Union general and eighteenth president.

McFeely is a historian and retired professor of history. He has authored numerous books including biographies of Frederick Douglass and Thomas Eakins/5. It’s a very serious charge that must not be taken lightly. Consider also that if ordered to serve jail time, you’ll be serving it in the Alabama [ ]5/5(). McFeely accepts that Grant did drink to excess now and then, out of depression, but maintains that he was never an alcoholic.

It was the Civil War, of course, that released his frustrated ambitions. For professional soldiers like Grant, the opportunity the war presented for promotion was as dazzlingly clear as the ideological aspects were.
